Bangladesh Market Clash Misframed Online as Religious Attack on Muslim Shop Owner

A Bangladesh market clash involving Zakia Sultana was falsely portrayed online as a religious attack. Local reports and fact-checks traced the confrontation to a commercial dispute involving a rival clothing shop.

A market dispute in Bangladesh’s Rajbari was wrongly portrayed online as a religious attack after a confrontation involving a Muslim clothing shop owner and a former employee escalated on August 29.

The incident took place at Kapor Bazar, where Zakia Sultana, a Muslim clothing shop owner at Astha Fashion, led a women’s protest over a dispute with a former employee. The former employee had started a rival shop without settling accounts, triggering tensions between the two sides.

The situation escalated when men kicked Sultana as police escorted her away from the scene. However, local reports confirmed that the confrontation stemmed from commercial issues involving the market rivalry and unsettled accounts, rather than a religious dispute.

Despite the circumstances, posts circulating online falsely described Sultana as a Hindu teacher who had been attacked by Islamists. Fact-checks subsequently established that the woman involved was Zakia Sultana, a Muslim clothing shop owner, and that the dispute was connected to business matters at the market.

The incident has since prompted calls for resolution of the commercial dispute, as the online portrayal of the confrontation as a religious attack was found to be inconsistent with the facts surrounding the August 29 market clash.
